Forbidden Planet – DJ Loser – Illusion Hunt – FP018

Following seminal releases on Novi Svijet, Veyl and Live Adult Entertainment, DJ Loser makes his Forbidden Planet debut with “Illusion Hunt” an album of killer rave, trance and techno cuts in his signature style.

Based in Thessaloniki, Greece, Dj Loser has had a significant impact on the international underground scene as a key figure in the modern revival of a darker, more hardcore techno sound. Unsurprisingly, his releases on Live Adult Entertainment are almost impossible to get your hands on.

The album itself features nine tracks which range from jacking trance & techno (e.g. Bad Standard, End of Hypnosis) to hip-hop/dnb inspired cuts (Illusion Hunt) and even ethereal soundscapes (Godknights Stigma, Synethesia Symptom).

This is a release you won’t want to miss.

RFR – Jichael Mackson – Flat Moon Society EP – RFR018

Yep people, you’ve got us right. While many of us are still looking for traces of lizard people  wandering over a flat earth, your favourite producer’s favourite producer has already boarded his  space vehicle in the direction of moon, closely observing our mediocre attempts to enrich our  earthly existence.

Magician Jichael Mackson opens his bag, presenting the signature sound he’s so famous and  respected for. Deep and bass driven grooves, perfectly layered on top of each other like damask  steel. In order to enjoy this masterpiece, we recommend to snort a big line of that “Digital Dust”.

Family Biz” is taking a more laidback and broken beat direction. Dense percussions, intricate  harmonies and a lot of soul and jazz vibes are hidden in this gem. Best to be discovered with your  friends and loved ones on a sunny day beneath a shady tree, enjoying a couple of glasses while  waiting for the sunset. Geez, this is so damn gorgeous.

ATH” ends this formidable EP. Again, no club inspired vibes (cos clubs are closed anyway, right?)  pulsating out Mackson’s snyths, instead a more abstract broken beat crawling into our ears. Eerie  sound modulations and creepy acid – lovers of DJ Krush’s older works might fall in love with this.

Strictly Strictly – Varum – Vigilance – STRICT007

Varum delivers a massive hybrid of vehemence and thoughtfulness with his six-track-release Vigilance on Strictly Strictly. Side A pushes with wild blend of trancey breakbeat escapades including a big room flavored remix by Almaty, a full series of uncompromising uplifters. Side B contrasts with forceful Electro pensiveness, accompanied with a nailing Mell G remix. High prio for vigilance!

WSNWG – Rene Wise & Rødhåd – WSNWG007 – WSNWG007 (repress)

For the most recent collaborative release curated by WSNWG, label head Rødhåd invited young, Brighton-based breakthrough producer and DJ Rene Wise to his studio for a week-long jam session in 2019. The end result is four driving, hypnotic Techno tracks with a swinging groove and 90s-inspired percussion. Made for the club, they build up tension and captivate listeners with rolling baselines, funky rhythms and mystical melodies.

Climate Of Fear – Polar Inertia – Ripped Through The Valley – FEAR 003_2

Climate of Fear follows up Soft Boi’s debut LP with a mammoth drop: 12 tapes ripped straight from the first two years of Berlin parties. Released one per month, the series moves from Izabel’s shivering chug through Nkisi’s deadly anarcho-gabber psychedelia, Polar Inertia’s sleek techno throb and DJ Python & Mad Miran’s impromptu closing b2b.

Climate of Fear’s second installment in their tape series comes from Polar Inertia: a one hour masterclass of HD ice burn techno. Recorded live, the set shows PI in full command of their craft, lunging forward with deadly intent while opening up to moments of shivering awe.

Climate of Fear – Vladimir Ivkovic – Sweet Earth Flying – FEAR 003_9

Climate of Fear teams up with Vladimir Ivkovic for the eighth edition of its twelve part tape series. Recorded in in the last months of 2019, Vladimir showcases here his indelibly dank and syrupy sound. Gooey rave carnage, IDM turnarounds and flavor for weeks. One of the all time juiciest sets at any Climate party, this tape hits like a dripping mango in an arid desert. Out April 2021.

Ilian Tape – Jake Muir – Mana – ITLP10

Since he started producing music, Berlin-based American sound artist Jake Muir has been obsessed with sampling. His 2018 album “Lady’s Mantle” was based on manipulated chunks of vintage Californian surf rock, and its follow-up, 2020’s midnight symphony “The Hum Of Your Veiled Voice” was sourced from a wide variety of old records, and inspired by the work of experimental turntablists like Marina Rosenfeld, Janek Schaefer and Philip Jeck.

On “Mana”, Muir looks back to a misunderstood musical movement. Around 1995, a group of New York producers and DJs – including DJ Olive, DJ Spooky and Spectre – pioneered a genre-dissolving sound by unifying hip-hop techniques with ideas pulled from dub, jungle, ambient music and industrial noise. Badged “illbient”, it was a short-lived genre that felt like a high-minded psychedelic cousin of the UK’s trip-hop.

Muir uses illbient as the springboard for “Mana”, utilizing a selection of samples to inform his frothy drones and foreboding atmospheres. He ushers the material into 2021 by diverting it through his own contemporary worldview, attempting to recreate the hyperreal fantasy histories of Japanese RPGs (think “Dark Souls” and “Final Fantasy”) and nod to sensual, tactile soundscapes of European industrial labels Staalplaat and Soleilmoon. The result is a magickal, sensory journey that’s as physical as it is representational.

If the illbient producers were encouraging a burgeoning experimental music landscape to emphasize the tactile feeling of turntablism and sample manipulation, Muir is doing the same with “Mana”. Each track heaves and breathes not just with his cultural reference points, but with layered, complicated emotions. We can hear joy, sadness, desire and anguish, obscured by disintegrating noise, hallucinogenic harmonies and sub-aquatic bass. It’s electronic music that’s rooted not in technology, but in touch.
